| BRIEF
HISTORY
The
Tapered roller bearing was invented by Mr. Henry Timken
in the 18th Century. Since then for over 100 years,
The Timken Company has been a worldwide leader in Bearings
and Specialty Steel. They are the third largest bearing
manufacturer in the world claiming about 17% of the
total global bearing market in 2004. The Timken Company
keeps the world turning, with innovative ways to make
stake holders products run smoother, faster and more efficiently.
Timken’s highly engineered bearings, alloy steels and
related products and services turn up everywhere – on
land, on the seas and in space. Timken acquired the
TORRINGTON brand of bearings from Ingersoll-Rand in
2002, and now has a larger range and selection. With
combined operations in 27 countries, sales of $4.5 billion
in 2004 and 26,000 employees, Timken is Where You Turn™
for better performance.

Timken offers a broad size range of bearings from one
that is so small that it can be placed on the index
finger (used in a dental drill which operates at about
30,000 rpm) to ones of six feet in diameter (used in
heavy duty gear boxes which operates at ½ rpm). They
weigh from half an ounce to nine tons. This shows the
wide variety of different applications, which are specific
to industries like Power, Cement, Oil Exploration, Mining,
Steel, Aerospace and General Industries.
Timken bearings and components are completely interchangeable
and consistent in quality regardless of where in the
world they are manufactured or sold.
